Math 102 Biostatistics

Ch 3 cont’d & Ch 4

By

Attention: Please make sure you scan your questions (including graphs) in the right order (i.e. follow the order of the questions).  Otherwise, your lab work will NOT receive any credits.  See instructions below.

We will finish Ch 3 today and start Ch 4 right away. Ch 3 and 4 are closely related.

Building on the foundations in Ch 3, we will learn how to do simple predictions in Ch 4, a very practical topic.

Today’s videos are a bit long. You might want to take frequent breaks while you are watching.

Ch 4 is the last chapter in Part I of the book. We have covered four chapters in Part I:  Ch 1, 2, 3, & 4. Part I is about exploring data, which is the most straightforward part of the course.

After Ch 4, we will begin Ch 9 next time but not today.  From Ch 9 onward, you will find the subject matter a bit more abstract. So just keep up with the pace of the class, ask questions and join a study group!

Instructions

  • There are altogether 4 problems in this lab work:
    • #3.19 (Facts about correlation)
    • problem not in book (straight line and slope)
    • problem not in book (calculate squared residuals)
    • #4.28 — skip sub-part a) (linear regression)

  • To receive any credit for this assignment, you must scan your pages (including graphs) according to the order of the questions. DO NOT leave the graphs on the last couple of pages. Even if you write “For graphs, see page …“, your questions will still be considered out of order and you will NOT receive any credit for this assignment.

It will take the grader too much time to scroll up and down to find your graphs!  Unfortunately, I cannot afford to pay the grader a lot of hours.  I hope you understand.

  • The video explains the concepts and also shows you how to do the lab work:

  • Submit your lab work as a single PDF file to Canvas before the due date.
