Ch 17.3 & Ch 17.4 P-value and statistical significance

By

There are quite a few concepts in Ch 17.3 & Ch 17.4. When you watch the videos below the first time, you might not understand everything right away. That’s understandable. We just have to start somewhere, take small steps and keep at it! That’s how you learn math—one problem at a time. Yes, it is a slow process and that’s why it is important to start early!

What you need to do is to follow the Classwork example in the video—follow how I do the Classwork example and write it up. Then you can go back to re-watch some of the videos and the concepts will make more sense to you.  Once you start doing the homework multiple choice questions, you will have a much better understanding of the entire chapter.

Previously …

We learned how to State Hypotheses in Ch 17.2. Now, we need to finish the rest of the tasks in hypothesis testing. These concepts are discussed in Ch 17.3 and Ch 17.4.

Here is the list of all the steps in hypothesis testing

    • State the hypotheses
    • Calculate the z score and Find the tail probability (P-value)
    • Compare P-value with \( \alpha \)
    • Draw your conclusion

Here are the details:

Calculate the z test-statistic & find the P-value

Compare P-value with \( \alpha \)  (level of significance)

Classwork problem:

— There is only one Classwork problem as shown in the video. What you need to do is to write out the answer (hypotheses, z score, etc) in the same format as shown in the video and turn that in as that’s how the grader grades your Classwork.

(No need to copy the question, just write out your answer including the diagrams.)
